What is MR/DD Services (Intellectual Disability)?

MR/DD means substantial limitations in present functioning that is manifested during the period from birth to adolescence and/or adulthood and is characterized by significantly sub-average intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior including related limitation in two or more of the following applicable adaptive skill areas:

Communication, self-care, home living, social skills, community use, self-direction, health and safety, functional academics, leisure, and/or work.

To allow MR/DD individuals to return to and live in their community with as much independence as possible.

The SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST (MR/DD Services ) provides professional speech/language services to individuals who are MR/DD directly in order to facilitate the individual's ability to independently and functionally communicate.

•  Evaluations: SLP evaluates (by observation) MR/DD individuals to determine their functional communication abilities and needs; recommends general and individualized activities and strategies which would facilitate independent, functional communication; recommends methods for integrating communication development throughout each individual's various daily activities.

•  Development and Implementation: SLP develops and initiates the implementation of communication development activities and strategies; provides ongoing professional monitoring and review of communication development activities and strategies; initiates changes in activities and strategies/and environmental modifications.

APPROVED TREATMENT: MR/DD individuals who have difficulty functioning in traditional school or vocational programs due to behavioral or psychiatric impairment and are being approved for Speech Treatment. Speech treatment programs are generally designed for both rehabilitation and education, and include small activities that focus on independent living skills, interpersonal skills, vocational preparation, and enrichment activities. The amount of services being determine by Speech Language Pathologist during the first session Evaluation/Observation.

SLP would determine the severity of the MR/DD individual and send CHTServices the form request for amount of services according the client's needs. It can be 1, 2, or 3 times a week for 1-10 weeks. If MR/DD client needs more services, then SLP would apply for more services (services provided range from long turn services dependent upon client's need(s).
